Fans of Atlanta Falcons are aware that the contracting of Quarterback Kirk Cousins turned out not to be a smart move. But David Kenyon from Bleacher Report argued on January 25 that it was historically bad.
Kenyon calculated the four -year -old deal of Cousins, worth $ 180 million, from last season out of season to the ten worst American professional sports contracts of this decade.
“Hey, I was wrong too. When the Atlanta Falcons Kirk Cousins contracted during the low season of 2024, I welcomed the step,” Kenyon wrote.
“At the end of the year he was put on the bench.
“Afterwards it does not help, given that Atlanta contracted him in March and used a first round on Michael Penix Jr. in April. It seemed that the Falcons had entered into a long -term commitment with Cousins with a four -year contract with $ 100 million in income. ” Guaranteed money and a non-trade clause, so that selection was a surprise.
It turned out that the Falcons had given themselves a reserve plan and had to use it quickly. Cousins threw 18 touchdowns against 16 interceptions that were the worst in the competition, and Atlanta went 7-7 in his 14 starts.
“It is expected that the team will switch from Cousins somewhere in the low season of 2025.”
Kenyon simply mentioned the 10 worst sports contracts of this decade and did not rank. But Cousins was one of the four NFL deals on the list. The other three were also for Quarterbacks: Deshaun Watson, Russell Wilson and Daniel Jones.
If I would rank those four deals in terms of the ‘worst’ contract, Cousins would come in third place, behind Watson and Wilson.
Watson remained partly with the browns because his contract was completely guaranteed, which, ironically, is a trend that started Cousins seven years ago at the Minnesota Vikings.
Watson’s full contract of $ 230 million was fully guaranteed when signing. The Cousins deal included a guaranteed $ 90 million.
The other two quarterbacks, Wilson and Jones, had only two years of contract duration before their teams limited their losses and released them. The Falcons may have to do that after one season at Cousins.
In any case, in the case of the Falcons, they formed a backup plan after they had signed Cousins, making Michael Penix Jr. in general in general. The lack of other options is the other reason why Watson still has his job with the browns.
The Broncos released Wilson out of season last season and then set up Bo Nix in the first round of the NFL-Draft of 2024. NIX disappeared four selections after Penix from the board.
Despite significant problems with the salary ceiling because of the Wilson deal, Nix Denver led to his first play-off performance in nine years during his smoking season. As a starter in the first year, Penix will strive to put an end to the seven -year drought after the season at the Falcons, which is expected to have cappobles this season.
